Choose Dataweavers if
You need someone to run the DXP
Sitecore or Optimizely operations in your own Azure tenant, a 24/7 operations team, disaster recovery as standard and a managed headless front end.
These two are not like-for-like. Dataweavers runs and operates enterprise Sitecore and Optimizely platforms inside your own Azure tenant. Akamai delivers and protects traffic for any site from one of the largest edge networks, and also sells cloud compute. The real question is which problem you need solved, and whether you need both.
Written by Sengo, an official Dataweavers partner that also delivers projects on Akamai. Sengo is not an Akamai partner. We disclose the relationship; it does not decide the verdict.
TL;DR
If your pain is running Sitecore XP/XM or Optimizely itself (upgrades, scaling, deployments, disaster recovery, a headless front end and someone watching it all night), Dataweavers is the right tool. It operates the platform inside your Azure tenant.
If your pain is global performance, traffic spikes, attacks, bots or API abuse across many sites and origins, Akamai is the right tool. It does not operate your CMS. Large estates often run both: Dataweavers for the platform, Akamai at the edge.
Choose Dataweavers if
Sitecore or Optimizely operations in your own Azure tenant, a 24/7 operations team, disaster recovery as standard and a managed headless front end.
Choose Akamai if
More than 4,300 edge locations, WAF, bot and API protection, edge functions and cloud compute for any stack.
Facts checked against Dataweavers product pages, Akamai's 2025 annual report, product pages, ISO certificate and PCI attestation, in October 2026. Delivery, security and platform operations are quote-based on both sides.
| Dimension | Dataweavers | Akamai |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Runs and operates Sitecore XP/XM, Optimizely CMS and headless front ends for you | Delivers and protects traffic to any origin; also sells general-purpose cloud compute |
| Where your platform runs | WinnerInside your own Azure tenant; your data and environment stay with you | Your origin stays wherever you host it; traffic passes through Akamai's shared edge network |
| Global edge footprint | Multi-region load balancing across the Azure regions you choose | WinnerMore than 4,300 edge locations in over 130 countries and about 700 cities (December 2025) |
| Sitecore and Optimizely operations | WinnerFusion automates platform management for XP/XM on Azure PaaS and Optimizely on Azure | Not in scope; your team or a partner operates the CMS |
| Headless front-end hosting | WinnerArc includes a front-end host, backend-for-frontend APIs, API management, caching and deploy pipelines | No managed Next.js host; you assemble one on Akamai Cloud virtual machines or Kubernetes |
| Edge compute | Rendering and APIs run in Azure; no general edge function product | WinnerEdgeWorkers run JavaScript on V8 at the edge with EdgeKV storage; Fermyon WebAssembly functions acquired in December 2025 |
| Web, API and bot security | WAF, DDoS and bot protection and role-based access built into Arc | WinnerApp & API Protector (WAF, bot, API and DDoS protection) and a dedicated Bot Manager product |
| Disaster recovery | WinnerAutomated disaster recovery included as standard in Fusion | Keeps delivery running at the edge; recovery of your origin and CMS stays your responsibility |
| Who watches your application | WinnerA 24/7 operations team monitors hosting, APIs and front end, with SLA-backed operations | Akamai operates its platform; monitoring your application and CMS stays with your team |
| Works with any stack | Purpose-built for Sitecore, Optimizely and Contentstack; not a general-purpose host | WinnerSits in front of any website, app or API, on any cloud or on premises |
| Compliance evidence | GDPR compliance; Arc is designed to meet GDPR, HIPAA and APRA requirements inside your tenant | WinnerISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certification, PCI DSS attestation for Ion and App & API Protector, and FedRAMP Moderate |
| Pricing model | Quote-based platform fees; Azure consumption sits in your own tenant | Delivery and security on quote-based contracts; Akamai Cloud is self-serve from $5 per month |
Running the DXP is the hard part
Delivery and protection at global scale are the hard part
Dataweavers and Akamai solve different layers, so many enterprise estates use them together.
Because these platforms do different jobs, the usual project is adding one to the other or changing the origin behind Akamai, not replacing one with the other.
When security or global reach requires an edge layer
Main effort driver: the number of security rules and cache behaviors to reconcile
When Akamai stays but platform operations change
Main effort driver: the number of environments, integrations and custom infrastructure
Not as a managed service. Akamai Cloud sells virtual machines, Kubernetes (LKE) and object storage, so a team could build and run its own environment there. Nobody at Akamai operates the CMS for you. Dataweavers is built for exactly that, inside your Azure tenant.
For many single-platform estates, Arc's caching, WAF, DDoS and bot protection and multi-region load balancing are enough. If you need a global edge with thousands of locations, advanced bot management or one security layer across many sites, Akamai covers a much wider scope. See our Dataweavers page and our Akamai page.
Yes. Akamai can sit in front of a Dataweavers-run origin like any other. Plan who owns security rules and how publishing clears the edge cache before you go live.
No. Sengo delivers projects on Akamai but has no partnership with Akamai. Sengo is an official Dataweavers partner, a Netlify partner and a Sitecore partner.
They answer different audit questions. Dataweavers keeps the platform and its data in your own Azure tenant, which helps with data residency and governance. Akamai holds ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certification, PCI DSS attestation for its secure delivery and security products, and FedRAMP Moderate. Ask both for current reports.
Dataweavers is quote-based, with Azure consumption in your own tenant. Akamai's delivery and security products are usually sold on quote-based enterprise contracts, while Akamai Cloud compute is self-serve, from $5 per month for shared CPU and $36 per month for dedicated CPU. Compare the cost of the work each removes, not only the line item.
