Choose Netlify if
Your team ships a composable front end
Deploy Previews, built-in forms and split testing, unlimited members on Pro and a framework-agnostic approach.
These two solve different problems. Netlify is a developer front-end cloud: Git deploys, a Deploy Preview for every change, functions, forms and a managed CDN. Akamai is an enterprise edge platform for delivery and security at very large scale, with its own cloud compute. The useful question is which job each one should do in your stack.
Written by Sengo, an official Netlify partner that also delivers projects on Akamai. We have no partnership with Akamai. We disclose the Netlify partnership; it does not decide the verdict.
TL;DR
If you need to ship a modern, composable front end and let a whole team review changes, Netlify gets you there with little operational work. Deploy Previews, forms, split testing and functions are built in, and the Pro plan covers unlimited members.
If you need to deliver and protect a large, mixed web estate, with strict security, heavy media or government compliance, Akamai is built for that job. You or a partner run the origin, and delivery and security are usually negotiated in an enterprise contract.
Choose Netlify if
Deploy Previews, built-in forms and split testing, unlimited members on Pro and a framework-agnostic approach.
Choose Akamai if
More than 4,300 edge locations, WAF, bot and DDoS protection in one product, media optimization and FedRAMP Moderate.
Facts checked against official Netlify and Akamai pricing, documentation, filings and compliance pages in October 2026. Because the platforms solve different problems, we compare them on what a buyer weighs, not on a feature checklist.
| Dimension | Netlify | Akamai |
|---|---|---|
| Developer workflow | WinnerGit deploys with a Deploy Preview for every change and atomic deploys with instant rollback | Configuration in Property Manager, the API, the CLI or Terraform, tested on Akamai's staging network before production activation; no built-in Git deploy previews |
| Framework support | WinnerFramework-agnostic: Astro, Next.js, SvelteKit, Nuxt and others, with App Router, server rendering and ISR through Netlify's Next.js adapter | Framework-agnostic: you build in your own CI and serve from an origin such as Object Storage, compute instances or Kubernetes |
| Built-in site features | WinnerNetlify Forms and branch-based split testing with no extra services | Delivery and security features; forms and experiments live in your application or other tools |
| Operational effort | WinnerFully managed: build, hosting, CDN and functions in one platform | Akamai delivers and protects; you or a partner build, host and operate the origin |
| Server compute | Functions in TypeScript, JavaScript or Go, plus background functions | Akamai Cloud virtual machines, managed Kubernetes (LKE) and App Platform, plus WebAssembly functions through the Fermyon acquisition |
| Edge compute | Edge Functions on Deno, deployed from Git with the rest of the site | EdgeWorkers runs JavaScript on V8 isolates across Akamai's edge, with the EdgeKV key-value store |
| Network reach | Global CDN managed for your site | WinnerMore than 4,300 edge points of presence in over 130 countries and about 700 cities |
| Caching control | Atomic deploys, ISR, fine-grained cache headers including stale-while-revalidate | Rule-based caching per path, header or cookie in Property Manager, with purge by API |
| WAF, bot and DDoS protection | Automatic DDoS protection on all plans; managed WAF ruleset, traffic rules and rate limiting through Advanced Web Security on Enterprise | WinnerApp & API Protector combines WAF, bot, API and DDoS protection; Bot Manager for advanced bot defense |
| Image and video delivery | Netlify Image CDN transforms images on demand and serves AVIF or WebP | WinnerImage & Video Manager offers more than 30 image transformations and optimizes video as well as images |
| Pricing model | WinnerPublished self-serve pricing: Pro at $20 per month with unlimited members and a monthly credit pool | Delivery and security are usually quote-based enterprise contracts; Akamai Cloud compute is self-serve and hourly, from $5 per month |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27018, PCI DSS and HIPAA with a BAA | WinnerSOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001:2022 with ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701, PCI DSS Level 1 service provider and FedRAMP Moderate |
You want a managed home for a composable front end
You need delivery and security at enterprise scale
Large organizations often keep Akamai for the wider estate and host a new front end on Netlify. Netlify's support guidance is direct about one point: it does not recommend placing another CDN or proxy in front of its own.
Moving between these platforms is more than a configuration change, because Akamai does not build or host your front end for you. Splitting hostnames between them is usually the smaller project.
Typical when a site must join an estate already on Akamai
Main effort driver: running the origin and replacing built-in features
Typical when a team wants managed builds and previews
Main effort driver: the number of edge rules and EdgeWorkers to replace
Typical when Akamai stays for the rest of the estate
Main effort driver: security policy alignment and hostname ownership
Only partly. Akamai delivers and protects sites at very large scale and sells cloud compute, but it does not offer Git deploys with a preview for every change, forms or split testing. To host a front end on Akamai, you build it in your own pipeline and run the origin yourself, or with a partner.
You can, but Netlify advises against it. Its support guidance says a CDN in front adds latency, can serve stale content after a deploy and breaks features such as split testing and accurate analytics. If you must, point the proxy at your .netlify.app hostname and do not cache Netlify-served routes. Netlify supports this setup only for Enterprise customers.
Yes, if you operate them. Static output can be served from Akamai Cloud Object Storage behind Akamai's CDN, and server-rendered frameworks run on Akamai Cloud compute instances or Kubernetes. EdgeWorkers is designed for request and response logic at the edge, not for running a full framework server.
They price different things. Netlify Pro starts at $20 per month with unlimited members and bills usage in credits. Akamai delivery and security are usually quote-based contracts, while Akamai Cloud compute starts at $5 per month for a shared CPU instance. For high-traffic estates, a negotiated Akamai contract can compare well; for a single front end, Netlify is usually simpler to budget.
Both hold SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS. Netlify supports HIPAA with a BAA. Akamai adds FedRAMP Moderate and ISO 27017 and 27701, which matters for public sector buyers. Ask each vendor for its current reports through its trust center.
