Choose Vercel if
Your team ships a modern front end
Git deploys with previews, day-one Next.js support, Fluid compute and built-in analytics, with published pricing.
These two are not like-for-like. Vercel is a developer front-end cloud: push to Git, get a preview, ship to its CDN with functions included. Akamai is an enterprise edge platform for delivery and security at very large scale, with its own cloud compute. Many organizations end up using both, so the real question is which job each one should do.
Written by Sengo, which delivers projects on both Vercel and Akamai and has no partnership with either. We are an official Netlify partner, which competes with Vercel. We disclose this; it does not decide the verdict.
TL;DR
If you need to ship and iterate on a modern front end, especially a Next.js site, Vercel gets you there with far less operational work. Every change gets a preview URL, builds and hosting are managed, and pricing is published and self-serve.
If you need to deliver and protect a large, mixed web estate, with strict security, video and image delivery at scale or government compliance, Akamai is built for that job. You or a partner run the origin, and delivery and security are usually negotiated in an enterprise contract.
Choose Vercel if
Git deploys with previews, day-one Next.js support, Fluid compute and built-in analytics, with published pricing.
Choose Akamai if
More than 4,300 edge locations, WAF, bot and DDoS protection in one product, media optimization and FedRAMP Moderate.
Facts checked against official Vercel and Akamai pricing, documentation, filings and compliance pages in October 2026. Because the platforms solve different problems, we compare them on what a buyer weighs, not on a feature checklist.
| Dimension | Vercel | Akamai |
|---|---|---|
| Developer workflow | WinnerGit push deploys, with a preview URL for every change | Configuration in Property Manager, the API, the CLI or Terraform, tested on Akamai's staging network before production activation; no built-in Git deploy previews |
| Framework support | WinnerBuilt by the creators of Next.js; Astro, SvelteKit and Nuxt also deploy with little configuration | Framework-agnostic: you build in your own CI and serve from an origin such as Object Storage, compute instances or Kubernetes |
| Operational effort | WinnerFully managed: build, hosting, CDN and functions in one platform | Akamai delivers and protects; you or a partner build, host and operate the origin |
| Server compute | Fluid compute with Active CPU pricing and official runtimes including Node.js and Python | Akamai Cloud virtual machines, managed Kubernetes (LKE) and App Platform, plus WebAssembly functions through the Fermyon acquisition |
| Edge compute | Functions run in regions you choose on Vercel's network, close to your data | WinnerEdgeWorkers runs JavaScript on V8 isolates across Akamai's edge, with the EdgeKV key-value store |
| Network reach | Global CDN managed for your project | WinnerMore than 4,300 edge points of presence in over 130 countries and about 700 cities |
| Caching control | ISR, cache headers and an automatic cache purge on every deploy | Rule-based caching per path, header or cookie in Property Manager, with purge by API |
| WAF, bot and DDoS protection | DDoS mitigation on all plans, custom WAF rules on Pro (up to 40), OWASP managed rules on Enterprise | WinnerApp & API Protector combines WAF, bot, API and DDoS protection; Bot Manager for advanced bot defense |
| Image and video delivery | Image Optimization resizes and converts images on demand | WinnerImage & Video Manager offers more than 30 image transformations and optimizes video as well as images |
| Pricing model | WinnerPublished self-serve pricing: Pro at $20 per month with one deploying seat and $20 of included usage | Delivery and security are usually quote-based enterprise contracts; Akamai Cloud compute is self-serve and hourly, from $5 per month |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001:2022, PCI DSS and HIPAA BAA ($350 per month on Pro) | WinnerSOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001:2022 with ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701, PCI DSS Level 1 service provider and FedRAMP Moderate |
| Performance analytics | Native Web Analytics and Speed Insights with real-user Core Web Vitals | Real-user monitoring and log streaming available as separate Akamai products |
You want the shortest path from code to production
You need delivery and security at enterprise scale
Large organizations often keep Akamai for the wider estate and host a new front end on Vercel. That works, but Vercel's own documentation recommends against placing a reverse proxy in front of a Vercel project. Plan the setup with that guidance in mind.
/.well-known/vercel/*, send the correct SNI hostname, and purge Akamai's cache after each deploy, since Vercel only purges its own.Moving between these platforms is more than a configuration change, because Akamai does not build or host your front end for you. Adding Akamai in front of Vercel is usually the smaller project.
Typical when a site must join an estate already on Akamai
Main effort driver: running the origin and rebuilding the preview workflow
Typical when a team wants managed builds and previews
Main effort driver: the number of edge rules and EdgeWorkers to replace
Typical when security policy requires one edge for every site
Main effort driver: cache, purge and security rule tuning
Only partly. Akamai delivers and protects sites at very large scale and sells cloud compute, but it does not offer Git-push deploys with previews for every change. To host a front end on Akamai, you build it in your own pipeline and run the origin yourself, or with a partner. Many teams use Akamai and a front-end cloud together.
Yes, but Vercel does not recommend a reverse proxy in front of its projects, because it reduces firewall visibility and adds a second cache. If you need it, Akamai is a supported Verified Proxy Lite provider: enable True-Client-IP and Origin IP ACL, exclude /.well-known/vercel/* from caching and purge Akamai after each deploy.
Yes, if you operate it. A static export can be served from Akamai Cloud Object Storage behind Akamai's CDN. Server rendering needs a Node.js server on Akamai Cloud compute instances or Kubernetes. EdgeWorkers is designed for request and response logic at the edge, not for running a full Next.js server.
They price different things. Vercel Pro starts at $20 per month with one deploying seat and metered usage beyond $20 of included credit. Akamai delivery and security are usually quote-based contracts, while Akamai Cloud compute starts at $5 per month for a shared CPU instance. For high-traffic estates, a negotiated Akamai contract can compare well; for a single front end, Vercel is usually simpler to budget.
Both hold SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001:2022 and PCI DSS. Akamai adds FedRAMP Moderate and ISO 27017, 27018 and 27701, which matters for public sector buyers. Vercel offers a HIPAA BAA as a paid add-on on Pro. Ask each vendor for its current reports through its trust center.
No. Sengo delivers projects on Akamai and on Vercel without a partnership with either. We are an official Netlify partner and Dataweavers partner. See how we work with each platform: Vercel, Akamai, or read our Netlify vs Vercel comparison.
