Choose Coveo if
Breadth and control
Your index spans several enterprise systems, permissions must be enforced, and you have people to tune relevance over time.
Coveo and Algolia are both credible enterprise search vendors, but they solve different problems. Coveo is built around a unified, permission-aware index across many enterprise systems. Algolia is built around an API-first engine that developers can ship in days. This comparison helps you pick the one that fits your content, your team and your budget.

TL;DR
Coveo fits when search has to span many systems (website, Salesforce, ServiceNow, SharePoint, knowledge bases), when document-level permissions matter, and when you want generative answers grounded in that unified index. You pay for it with a negotiated annual contract and a longer ramp.
Algolia fits when you need fast, typo-tolerant search on a website, app or catalog, live in weeks, with a small developer team. Pricing starts self-serve and pay-as-you-go. The trade-off is fewer native enterprise connectors, and its most advanced AI features (NeuralSearch) sit on the annual Elevate plan.

Choose Algolia if
Your content is a website, app or product catalog, you want to ship in weeks, and your developers prefer an API they can own end to end.

Adding enterprise sources and permissions
Main effort driver: the number of sources to connect and the usage data needed to train ranking
Simplifying a website or catalog search
Main effort driver: the query pipelines and permission rules to rebuild in Algolia
At the start, almost always. Algolia's Grow plan includes 10,000 searches and 100,000 records per month for free, then charges $0.50 per extra 1,000 searches (Algolia pricing). Coveo sells annual or three-year subscriptions based on queries, indexed items and add-ons, with quotes in USD or CAD (Coveo pricing). At high volume, or once you need NeuralSearch on Elevate, the gap narrows. Model your real traffic for three years before deciding.
Both support multilingual indexes. Algolia lets you set language behaviour (plurals, stop words, query languages) per index. Coveo is headquartered in Quebec City, serves many bilingual Canadian organizations and offers a Canadian data region. For a bilingual Quebec site, test both on your own French queries. Language support alone rarely decides this choice.
Yes, but you build and maintain the indexing yourself, including any permission filtering. Coveo ships native connectors for these systems and indexes their permissions with the content. If those sources are central to your project, Coveo saves a lot of custom code.
Coveo has the more mature offer today: Relevance Generative Answering, an Answer API and a Passage Retrieval API that feeds your own LLM, all grounded in a permission-aware index (Coveo GenAI). Algolia launched Agent Studio in beta and AskAI in 2025, with bring-your-own-LLM. It is a credible path for public content, but younger.
Yes, and some organizations do: Coveo for federated, permission-aware search across support and knowledge content, Algolia for a fast product catalog or app search. It works when each surface has a clear owner. It also gives you a low-risk way to pilot one engine before a full switch. The cost is two contracts and two skill sets.
It adds a third option. SitecoreAI includes entry-level Sitecore Search, and Coveo also connects to Sitecore. Read our Sitecore Search vs Coveo comparison, or request a Coveo audit to see what your current setup actually delivers.
The right answer depends on your sources, your permissions, your traffic and your team. Bring your use cases and we will give you a straight recommendation, including when it is not Coveo.
